Political Biography

Zubir Ahmed is a transplant surgeon who became the Labour MP for Glasgow South West in 2024, kept operating to hold his medical licence, and gave much of what he earned from it to charity. In September 2025 he was made a junior health minister, a doctor sent to help run the thing he had spent his life inside. It lasted eight months. In May 2026, after Labour was routed in the Scottish parliament elections, Ahmed resigned and called on Keir Starmer to go. His register shows around £54,000 from surgery at the Golden Jubilee and the Queen Elizabeth in Glasgow, work he declared in full. He speaks often and votes reliably, 410 of 429 divisions. The awkward detail is that Ahmed moved early and publicly, while many senior colleagues were still pretending the leadership question could be managed away. Verdict: one of the first to say out loud what his party spent the summer trying not to.
