Sarah Coombes was elected Labour MP for West Bromwich on 4 July 2024 with 16,872 votes (46.2 per cent) and a comfortable majority of 9,554 (26.1 per cent), with Reform UK on 19.5 per cent and the Conservatives on 20.1 per cent on a turnout of just 49.2 per cent. The constituency was created by merging West Bromwich East and West Bromwich West, two seats of real Labour history: Betty Boothroyd, later Speaker of the Commons, held West Bromwich West, and Tom Watson held West Bromwich East.
That Watson link is the defining structural fact of her career. Born in London in November 1991 and educated at Jesus College, Oxford in History and Politics, she worked as Head of Policy and Communications for Tom Watson when he was Labour's deputy leader and MP for West Bromwich East, then advised Sadiq Khan as Mayor of London and worked for an environmental charity. She is effectively the political successor to her former boss in the same territory, a Londoner and Oxford graduate now representing a West Midlands seat.
She was appointed PPS to the Leader of the House of Commons in July 2024 and then PPS to the Home Secretary from September 2025, and has sat on the House of Commons Modernisation Committee since September 2024. She has voted in 443 divisions with zero rebellions, her debate activity concentrated on transport and on environment, food and rural affairs. Her ghost number plates campaign, launched in February 2025, targets plates designed to evade automatic number plate recognition cameras, a practical, public safety focused intervention.
